En resumen
- In conversation we speak 120 to 160 words per minute; on camera, 130 is a good starting point.
- Classes and speeches call for less (100 to 120); Reels and ads can take more (150 to 170).
- To measure your pace, read a text for 1 minute and count the words.
- With voice, the teleprompter follows your pace; at a fixed speed, you choose between 60 and 300 words per minute.
There is no single right pace for everyone, but there are ranges that work. Knowing yours helps you write scripts of the right length and set your teleprompter speed right the first time.
Pace by situation
| Situation | Words per minute | Why |
|---|---|---|
| Speech in a large room | 100–120 | Sound takes time to reach the back, and there is applause and laughter. |
| Class or training | 110–130 | Your audience is learning and needs time. |
| YouTube video | 130–150 | Conversational pace, with room to breathe. |
| Webinar or sales demo | 120–140 | There are numbers and details that must land. |
| Reels, TikTok and ads | 150–170 | Every second counts and viewers decide fast. |
| Audiobook or voice-over | 140–160 | Continuous reading, with no picture to help. |
Measure your pace in 1 minute
- Pick a text of your ownAn old script or an email. Avoid technical text that slows you down.
- Read it aloud for 1 minuteWith a timer, at the pace you’d record. Don’t speed up to “win”.
- Count the words you readPaste that part of the text into the calculator below: it counts for you.
- Do it twice moreThe average of the three readings is your pace.
The right teleprompter speed
On a teleprompter with a fixed speed, the text always scrolls at the same rate and you have to keep up. Start about 10 below your measured pace: it’s easier to speed up than to chase the text. In CueTwin you choose between 60 and 300 words per minute and change it in steps of 10 with the arrow keys or a remote.
With Follow my voice, there is no speed to set: CueTwin listens and the text moves at your pace, even when you slow down for a hard part or stop to show something.
Speaking at the right pace
- Slow down for numbers and names. They are what people want to remember.
- Speed up a little on transitions (“now let’s look at…”). They don’t need weight.
- Take real pauses. One second of silence after an important idea is worth more than speaking slowly all the time.
- Record yourself and listen. Almost everyone thinks they speak slower than they do.
